Here's a heads up for you on an new addition to the calendar. I'm declaring September 2016 to be the inaugural Snoodtember, a celebration of snoods and a time to wear them and love them. I hope you'll enjoy the ride and maybe even jump on board!
Why snoods?
I'm a bit fascinated by snoods. Knitted and crocheted snoods are quite popular with vintage loving girls and they look fabulous. They are distinctive, easy to wear, and keep your hair under control while looking chic. But for some reason it seems that only one branch of the snood family tree is popular in vintage circles at the moment, and there is so much more to the snood than just these styles. I want to explore all that the world of snoods has to offer us.
Snoods came in different shapes and sizes, were worn by themselves or with hats, re-appeared in a number of time periods, were made of all kinds of materials, and decorated in all kinds of ways. I won't have time in one month to explore everything, but I want to expand your horizons a little and celebrate the snood in all its glory!
My Snoodtember plans
On the blog I'll be sharing some posts with more information about snoods, and how to wear them, as well as links to knitting and crochet patterns. There will be outfit inspiration featuring looks from some lovely ladies with killer vintage style. And, of course, there will be the snood-a-long! I'll show you how to make a fabric snood and trim your snoods.
Even though I have never once worn a snood before, I am boldly venturing into these waters and I'll be sharing how I go with my own outfit photos. Plus I'm going to have weekly themes to give me a bit more guidance and inspiration.
Join in!
I'd love for you to join me in celebrating the inaugural Snoodtember by wearing a snood, sewing along with me, and/or using the weekly themes to expand your snood horizons.
I'll be sharing images primarily on Instagram, and in a round up post here at the end of the month, and I'd love to see your looks too. On Instagram, use the hashtag #snoodtember and tag me @tanithrowan so I don't miss them. If you aren't on Instagram, you can email photos to tanithrowandesigns@gmail.com or send me them on Facebook if you prefer. (I would love to see your photos even if you don't want me to share them, and I will only share anything with permission!)
Are you a snood wearer or have you ever made one? If not, are you willing to give it a go with me?
I have never worn a snood, and I'm not sure I even have enough hair to make one work, but I love to see them on other people. This sounds really fun, and if I can figure out a way to rig one up I will definitely try to participate.
ReplyDeleteI've got a few ideas for short hair but I still need to explore further! I hope that you'll enjoy the proceedings either way :)
DeleteI like wearing snoods but am still a little uncertain about what to do with my hair at the front if I want to look a bit fancier than usual.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to Snoodtember and the snood-a-long.
I'm planning to start with a lot of tips and links, but this is a good one to start with: http://www.vavoomvintage.net/2015/11/4-ways-to-wear-snood.html although they don't seem easy to me! I'll definitely be trying to come up with something simpler for myself :P
DeleteI love snoods, just not on myself. It's one of those styles that I adore when other vintage girls wear, but I've never found one that suited me. I can't wait to see everyone else's snood-styles :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure yet if I like them on myself! I hope so!
DeleteI've worn them, and made a couple!! But with almost 3 inches of hair, it'll be a bit odd to wear a snood now. But I'll be getting braids soon, so I'll have some cute snoods to make along with you!!
ReplyDeleteYes that could be tricky :P But I'm glad you'll be joining in and I look forward to seeing your braids!
DeleteI've seen some very pretty, fashionable snoods, like one in purple velvet. If I ever marry, I'm going to cover my hair, and one of the styles of hair-covering I like is the snood (with solid fabric).
ReplyDeleteOooh a velvet one is something I am planning to try, and purple sounds lovely! And a fabric snood would be lovely for a wedding hair covering!
DeleteOh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteCan't contain excitement...must squeal my head off... :D
Seriously though, I'm jumping for joy right now. I love snoods so, soooo much and weave them into some of my looks throughout each season of the year.
I'm thrilled that you're going to be shining the spotlight on this awesome accessory and will definitely do my best to join in.
...More happiness squeals...
xoxo ♥ Jessica
I'm so glad you are excited and I hope you find it enjoyable and maybe even get some more inspiration!
DeleteI am so thrilled you are doing this! I have worn a snood once (one I crocheted myself) about 3 years ago and it's been in a drawer ever since. Just reading your post has made me want to get my hook out again and make them in different colours and styles. I have an original 40's pattern which includes a crochet and knit version with a matching shopping bag. I will dig it out and email you a copy which I'd be happy for you to share with everyone. Xx
ReplyDeleteThat is so sweet of you Gem, I would love to share that pattern! I'm glad you are getting excited to make and wear some more :)
DeleteOh, my...sooooo excited about this!!! Just heard about this from Jessica's blog, Chronically Vintage. I do want to wear snoods more often. I crocheted one years ago but want to make a red or pink one with a bow. I have been looking for patterns, so I can't wait for Snoodtember!!!! :):)
ReplyDeleteBest wishes,
Dee
Oh fabulous! It is going to be fun :)
DeleteUpdate: I crocheted a pale blue snood with sport yarn I had in my stash. Not sure if I would leave the house wearing it. LOL
DeleteSo,I started another one with red crochet thread that looks delicate and lacy like a doily. This I might actually wear in public :)
I came across someone suggesting one can wear a snood like a beret, is that a thing?!
Happy Snoodtember!!!
Best wishes,
Dee
Hi Dee! That red one sounds lovely! I hope you do wear it out :)
DeleteI saw something about that too, maybe it was the same article! I haven't seen anything similar in the vintage articles during my research. They are a similar shape so I guess you could? The closest thing to that idea I've found is a crochet pattern for a scarf-like thing that you can tie as a snood or as a turban (but it doesn't look like other snoods really). That article is here: http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/48336731
I'm in! Love wearing snoods, and looking forward to seeing more options on how to expand my look. Yay for Snoodtember!
ReplyDeleteLiz :)
Oh good! So glad you will be joining it :)
DeleteI have a snood that was crocheted for me, before I learnt how to do it myself. I had forgotten about it until now, likely because my hair has been cut into a graduated bob for seventeen months now and obviously I couldn't wear it even if I wanted to ... and now I sort of want too, hehe!
ReplyDeleteSomeone on Instagram suggested a velvet snood under a crocheted one to create the illusion of hair, and you could probably make any fabric snood work, if you wanted to pretend to have long hair for a bit!
DeleteAbsolutely! I would love to join in. I have admired snoods on others for years but with usually having short to bobbed length hair I have not been confident to try them. Very excited!
ReplyDeleteVintage articles talk about wearing them with short hair, but they don't give any details or suggestions, and I wouldn't be sure, but it is something I'll be looking into. I hope you will join in!
DeleteI am very excited by this. I do wear snoods sometimes but this is a great excuse to get them out more. Can't wait to see what else you share this month!
ReplyDeleteThanks Kate-Em and I look forward to seeing your snood style in action!
